about

Journeying over the space of a year, Chariot is Elijah Maja’s exploration of how platonic, romantic & familial relationships are formed, nurtured & nourished through different seasons. Maja leans into his Nigerian heritage, singing in Yoruba & English, at times blending the two. Collaboration is at the forefront of Chariot with production from King Krule, Joy Orbison, redLee, Omari Lyseight & Elijah Maja, himself, & album artwork from artist, fashion, & documentary photographer Bolade Banjo.

Elijah Maja is an artist, composer and researcher from London. The British-Nigerian artist works in multiple disciplines, including visual art and sound, with these mediums closely informing a process that aims to unfurl the relationship between ritual and music namely, experimental, dance, R&B, gospel, rap and UK bass music.

As a vocalist, Maja has previously worked with the likes of Jadasea, Goya Gumbani and Lala &ce under his Shola Majic alias. Also undertaking lead research roles for ‘Black to Techno’ by Jenn Nkiru and ‘Back and Song’ by Elissa Blount Moorhead and Bradford Young. The artist consciously allows the experiences of working across various disciplines to encourage his visual and musical practice.
